Sunchon National University Museum(국립순천대학교박물관)

Sunchon National University Museum

The museum was established in 1987 as the first museum of the eastern Jeolla province.

There are many exhibit halls and its collection is specialized in the ancient period of Korea(before the 10th century)

this museum is the best place to learn about the eastern Jeolla province, which has different culture with that of the western Jeolla. but the culture of the eastern Jeolla has a similarity with Gyeongsang province which located right next to it.

<검단산성>
In particular, a hall dedicated to Geomdan fortress of Sunchon (순천 검단산성 順天 劍丹山城)is important to the Baekje's history

the stone fortress was built during the sixth century by the Baekje kingdom.
through excavation, people unearthed a lot of remains and relics from the fortress.
as a result, it was designated as a historical site of Korea in 1999

the photo is a replica of a large well, found in the fortress.
it is 890 cm in length, 480 cm in width

a wooden dipper intact was also unearthed.

This coiled earthenware bottle was also excavated from the fortress.

<고인돌>
the following picture shows understructures of dolmen

In Korean dolmens, stone daggers were often found
putting a dagger in the grave is believed to have a ritual purpose driving evil spirit off from the grave.

two people praying in front of a huge stone dagger were carved on Orimdong dolmen of Yeosu, which shows ancient people's belief toward the stone dagger.

<가야 토기>
The museum also houses a lot of earthenware potteries dating to the Gaya period

Eventhough the eastern Jeolla currently belongs to Jeolla province of Korea,
as I mentioned above, it has a close correlation with the south-east area of Korea, the South Gyeongsang. this area was ruled by Gaya before the fifth or sixth century

two pottery  in the picture above were chamberpots of Baekje men

<마로산성>

Maro fortress is located in Gwangyang
it is believed that it had been used from the sixth century to the 10th century.

remains of collecting wells of Maro fortress

what drew my attention was these earthen horses.

they were found in the ritual site of Maro fortress.

interesting thing was that the horse didn't have their head which means they were decapitated.

but the horses on display have their head because the museum assemble them back again.

decapitating a horse conducted when people held rites as a sacrifice.

Field Trip to  GongSanSeong(公山城)

This was my second visit to  GongSanSeong.

(for basic information on  GongSanSeong,
just refer to the previous post;

I only visited the top during my former fieldtrip to  GongSanSeong,
so this time, I headed for the village Seong-an(성안마을)

The photo above was taken in the 1990s.

As you can see, there was a village at that time
but the village is currently changed into an excavation site like this.

Seong-an Village (성안마을) is located on flatland in GongSanSeong.
it has been suspected that there are important relics underground
because there were only a few ancient building sites in GongSanSeong's other regions and the should be more.

The importance of Gongsanseong was already mentioned in the former post.

The view of the excavation site in Seong-an Village

The trial digging on Seong-an Village commenced on 2004.
It was financed by Gongju University Museum.
They have buckled down on this excavation since earlier this year.

A distribution Chart of the Ruins

The excavation team of Gongju University dug six meters more from the stratum of Joseon Dynasty which was seventeen meters below the earth's surface.

After ending the excavation, this site is supposed to be changed into a traditional village for sightseeing.

I just wonder whether the plan will go well,
since if many significant relics are found in there,
the plans will be canceled.

These are roof tiles of the Baekje period, note that they are piled up in a coal bed, they seem to have been produced from the fall of Baekje in 660.

Proof of the war in 660 can be found in a huge pile of arrowheads discovered near the beds of roof tiles.
This is a huge discovery because it shows arrowheads of three different countries(Goguryeo, Baekje, Silla) in the 7th Century.

Take a look at this site where a man is standing.

The most significant relic was discovered there !

This is the relic.
Leather armor from the Baekje period with letters on it.

It is entirely unprecedented in the case of leather armor,
and is the oldest one in Korea.

The writing says

which means the year 645 in Chinese.

Because of this relic,
we can clearly identify the time period.

The Fieldtrip to Gongju (1)

Gongju was the second captital of Baekje(B.C.18~A.D.660)

after the first capital Hanseong(the present Seoul) was destroyed by Goguryeo(고구려:高句麗)

From 475 to 538, Gongju(then Woong-jin) was the center of Baekje

until Sabi became the third capital in 538.

Although Gongju was only the captital for about 60 years,

it has significant relics of the Baekje Dynasty.

Here is the first relic of Baekje, GongSanSeong(공산성:公山城)

The West Gate of GongSanSeong

The name GongSanSeong  is a combination of Gong(公) and SanSeong(山城).

'Gong' came out of 'Gongju(公州)', 'SanSeong' means a mountain fortress in Korean.

So the name GongSanSeong means the Mountain Fortress of Gongju.

However, GongSanSeong was called 'Woong-jin-seong(熊津城)' in the Baekje period.

because Gongju was named Woongjin at that time.

This fortress was constructed during the Baekje period.

However, the present stone-piled fortress was constructed in the Joseon Dynasty(1392~1910).

This fortress was made using soil and mud in Baekje period.

As a result, the culture of two dynasties co-exists in this fortress.

The stone monument constructed in the Joseon Dynasty

The Relics of Baekje Palace on the Top of the mountain

The relic of a pond constructed in the Baekje period

The Scenery of "Ssangsu-jeong" from the Pond Relic

There is a gazebo named "SsangSu-jeong" on the top of this mountain.

"SsangSu" means 'two trees', while "jeong" means a gazebo.

The gazebo got its name from the two trees that used to stand there.

In the Joseon Dynasty, King Injo(1595~1649) who had just evacuated Seoul (where a rebellion had risen), looked out at Seoul while leaning on the trees.

The rebellion was crushed, and the pleased King granted the trees a noble title.

However, they withered, so people built a gazebo to remember the trees by.

This is the SsangSu-jeong

The Relics of Baekje Palace

The Street of Gongju from Gong-sanseong

The Mountain Chiri

From GongSanSeong, you can see Chiri Mountain(就利山).

Chiri Mountain is a significant place in regards to the collapse of Baekje.

After the collapse of Baekje by the Tang(唐) and Silla(新羅) Dynasties in 660 ,

the ritual for rapprochement between the Baekje and Silla Dynasties was conducted on this mountain

with the participation of delegations from three other conturies.

Somebody says that Baekje's Chiri Mountain is not the actual Chiri Mountain

shown in the picture,

because the mountain in the picture is too low and the altar is nowhere to be found.

It is one of the mysteries of Baekje.

2010 December Field Trip

2010 December Field Trip

12/10-12/11
